This is an early MGA 1600 finished in Iris Blue, number 858 off the production line, built between the end of May and early June 1959. It was originally shipped to California where it spent most of it’s life until 1994, when it was shipped back to the UK by where it was stored in a council lock up garage for the next 12 years until I bought it in 2006 for £3250.00 advertised as rust free, but it was not, it was in a very sorry stateIt had been fitted !!! in America with a Volvo 1800cc engine and gearbox causing considerable damage to the original heater panel, chassis, engine mounts, bonnet, and transmission tunnel.
Over the next seven years it was completely stripped back to bare metal any rusty parts cut out and replaced. A right hand drive steering rack, dashboard, and brake pedal were sourced and fitted. All the floor boards, wiring loom, brake , and fuel pipes have been replacedthe Volvo engine has replaced with a genuine BMC MGA 1600c engine which has been totally rebuilt, fully balanced, with a lightened flywheel, fast road camshaft, and a polished and ported alloy crossflow cylinder head fitted with twin 1.75”Carburettors,all of which were all originally available from the BMC Competitions Department. An Alloy radiator and electric fans have been fitted to assist in keeping the engine cool.
A Ford Sierra 5 speed gearbox conversion has been installed to enable the car to keep up with modern day car speeds and improve economy.
A ¾” antiroll bar has been fitted to a modified front chassis extension, and the original 48 spoke 4”wire wheels have been replaced with 72 spoke 5.5”competiton ones fitted with 185×65 x15 tyres to improve the road holding .
The car also benefits from the addition of the BMC Works Style Microcell Competition Seats which give added comfort and support, and for peace of mind original Silver Grey Britax seat belts have been installed.
